Roundtable on Deep Tech and Science-Based Startups

On Friday, July 21st, the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) San Francisco held a private roundtable with Dr. Anna Christmann, Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy at the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The topic, Deep Tech and Science-based Startups, brought together experts in their field to discuss artificial intelligence and the range of new possibilities for AI-based start-ups.

DAAD RISE Worldwide 2024

RISE Worldwide starts its 15th year! In the past years more than 3,700 undergraduate students from German universities interned abroad as research assistants. And once more research groups from all over the world that are interested in hosting a research assistant from Germany in the summer of 2024 are invited to submit project offers to RISE Worldwide. Canadian professors already had to submit their offer through the Mitacs database as Mitacs handles the Canadian side of the program.

6th German-American Mobility Dialogue

On July 10th, DWIH San Francisco supported the 6th German-American Future Mobility Dialogue, hosted by the German-American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) West in San Francisco. This event explored the opportunities of autonomous individual road transportation while also covering the technical, legal, social, economical and human-factors related hurdles relating to its introduction. Held as a precursor event of the Road Transportation Symposium (ARTS 2023), the forum fostered a transatlantic exchange of knowledge and network building between experts from industry, academia and policy-making.

The Future of Aging: Transatlantic Perspectives on Digital Health Tech

On May 31st, the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) San Francisco, along with CITRIS and the Banatao Institute held a joint event, titled “The Future of Aging: Transatlantic Perspectives on Digital Health Tech,” which planted the seeds for a new collaboration between CITRIS Health and the Digital Urban Center for Aging and Health (DUCAH) in Germany. The Importance of Acceptance of Climate Research Findings for Political and Social Action

Trust in Science

On Tuesday, May 24th, we spent the day at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles for their event: “Trust in Science in the Context of Climate Change Action.” This event brought together Professors Rebeca Méndez, Jon Krosnick, Craig Callender, and Ursula Heise, who offered interdisciplinary perspectives on how we can increase awareness of the climate crisis and call to action through messaging and art, statistics on how Americans perceive climate change, as well as pitfalls that the scientific community has faced in fostering trust in its work.

Three Questions for Prof. Thomas Schildhauer

We were delighted to interview Prof. Thomas Schildhauer, who will be joining us at our upcoming event, The Future of Aging: Transatlantic Perspectives on Digital Health Tech, on May 31st, 2023 at UC Berkeley. Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Schildhauer is research and founding Director of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). He is also scientific director of the research group Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Society. Prof. Schildhauer studied computer science at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU) and holds PhDs in the field of software marketing, information management and public health. As computer scientist, marketing expert, internet researcher he works as university professor for electronic business at the University of the Arts (UdK), Berlin.

Falling Walls Lab 2023

Three minutes was all it took! DWIH San Francisco was again delighted to host the Falling Walls Lab, a world-class pitch competition and networking forum for students, researchers, and early-career scientists of all disciplines. This year, we received twenty applications from participants around the country, and invited twelve finalists to pitch their innovative ideas. Finalists were judged based on three categories: which demonstrated a breakthrough that creates a positive impact on science and society.

Four Questions for Prof. Norbert Holtkamp

We had the pleasure of interviewing Norbert Holtkamp, one of our Falling Walls Lab 2023 jurors. Dr. Holtkamp is Professor of Particle and Particle Astrophysics and Photon Science at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University which he joined in 2010. Since 2019, he is also the project director for the $1.1B LCLS-II Free Electron Laser construction project, built by 5 US national laboratories, which transitioned to operation last year. In June 2008, Dr. Holtkamp received the Gersh Budker Prize of the European Physical Society for recent, significant contribution to the accelerator field referring to the success of the SNS project.
